Volunteers welcome to help clean up litter in Plumsted

PLUMSTED – Volunteers are needed to help clean up litter in Plumsted Township.

On Earth Day, April 22, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Plumsted Youth for Nature and the Environment (PYNE) will conduct a community cleanup. The organization is reaching out to residents for a helping hand.

Individuals, families, friends, school clubs, scouting groups, youth groups, etc. are invited to volunteer and pitch in, according to a press release. Preregistration is appreciated. Trash bags and gloves will be provided. A limited number of pick-up sticks will also be available to borrow.

Register by contacting Dominic Esposito at pyne.president@gmail.com or at 609-649-3711 by April 14. Volunteers will report to the municipal building, 121 Evergreen Road, on April 22 to pick up a map and receive collection instructions and supplies.

Also on Earth Day, the New Jersey Tree Recovery Campaign will provide free tree seedlings to residents. The program helps communities replace trees that were damaged or destroyed by superstorm Sandy in 2012.

From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 22, residents will be able to pick up tree seedlings at the municipal building. Seedlings are available on a first come, first served basis and come with instructions on how to store, care for and plant them.

Residents should plant the seedlings within two days after pick-up in order to prevent the roots from drying out, according to a press release.

The goal of the Tree Recovery Campaign is to distribute more than 500,000 tree seedlings to New Jersey residents over the next five years. It is a joint effort among Plumsted Township, the New Jersey Forest Service, New Jersey soil conservation districts, Sustainable Jersey, the Arbor Day Foundation, Brothers International, BJ’s Wholesale Club, Wyndham Vacation Resorts and FedEx, according to the press release.
