Millstone horseman’s association slates Poker Run

MILLSTONE – The Horseman’s Association of Millstone Township (HAMT) will host its fifth annual equestrian event, the HAMT 2017 Poker Run, in the Assunpink Wildlife Management Area adjacent to Robbinsville and Roosevelt, on April 30.

The rain date will be May 7, according to a press release.

The course will be run through the hills, fields and along the lakes of the 6,373-acre wildlife management area. Single day riding permits are provided by HAMT, the 8-mile course will be well marked and this is not a timed event.

The course may be traveled at a rider’s leisure or at a choice of gaits as the various terrains permit.

Each rider will collect five poker chips along the trail during the ride. At the end of the ride, the rider will exchange the chips for five random playing cards. The rider will examine their “hand” and turn in their cards to the “dealer.”

The hands will be arraigned in order of highest poker ranking. When the final riders have returned, prizes will be assigned to the top 10 poker hands, according to the press release.

Registration opens at 9 a.m. at the Conservation Center in the Assunpink Wildlife Management Area and closes at 11:30 a.m. Each rider must have Negative Coggins within the last 24 months and a riding helmet.

Free refreshments for riders are offered at the trail’s midway checkpoint.
