Woodbridge High School’s softball team began the 2017 season on fire, and there was nothing South Amboy High School could do to cool the Barrons off.

The three runs South Amboy scored in the first half-inning of the game was all Jordan Cinelli was going to give up in the blowout-shortened game April 1.

Woodbridge scored 11 in the third and five in the fourth and won with ease, 18-3.

If anyone at the York College of Pennsylvania was unsure about Jordan Vazquez — she missed all of the 2016 season with an injury — he or she would have to re-think that now. In just one game (four at-bats), Vazquez reminded York why it was so interested in her. The senior, as she immediately did in the basketball season as well, showed doubters that she was back and as talented as ever. She led the Barrons with three hits, three RBIs and three runs.

One of her hits was a home run, which is not too shabby for a player that hadn’t competed in a regular-season softball game in about 23 months.

The team victory saw batters one through seven combining for 10 hits, including two apiece for Cinelli, Ashley Dugasz and Mackenzie Thomas.

South Amboy didn’t face Woodbridge at all last year while the Barrons were without Vazquez.

The Barrons played against Sayreville War Memorial High School April 3, and they will travel to South Plainfield High School April 5 for a 4 p.m. contest.
