SPOTSWOOD – The Catholic community in Spotswood is mourning the loss of one of its deacons.

Deacon John LaGreca, 59, of Immaculate Conception Church, passed away in his sleep on April 2.

LaGreca served as a deacon for almost two years at Immaculate Conception, located at 23 Manalapan Road in Spotswood.

LaGreca lived in Old Bridge, according to Rev. Msgr. Joseph Curry. He performed many tasks at the church from baptisms to teaching religious literature to preaching, Curry said.

LaGreca also taught sixth grade religious education at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Old Bridge, according to the church’s communication representative.

Visitation was held at Scarpaci Funeral Home, Brooklyn, New York. The funeral Mass was held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Brooklyn. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery, Queens, New York, the Rev. Msgr. William Benwell said in a prepared statement.

LaGreca is survived by his wife Cathy, son Christopher, daughter Angela, and three grandchildren, according to the prepared statement.

“Let us pray that John will find the fulfillment of his faith and the reward of his diaconate labors in the presence of the risen Lord. Let us also remember his family, that they will be consoled and strengthened by their faith and the support of friends,” Benwell said in the statement.
