MANALAPAN – Woodward Road between Valley Road and Lamb Lane will have a 25 mph speed limit if an ordinance introduced by the Manalapan Township Committee becomes law.
At a meeting on April 5, committee members voted 5-0 to introduce an ordinance to establish a 25 mph speed limit on that stretch of Woodward Road. The current speed limit between Valley Road and Lamb Lane is 35 mph.
The speed limit on Woodward Road is 25 mph from Sweetmans Lane to Valley Road. The introduction of the ordinance follows a recommendation from the municipal engineer, CME Associates, to extend the 25 mph speed limit from Valley Road to Lamb Lane.
The speed limit on Woodward Road between Valley Road and Route 33 is currently 35 mph.
If the ordinance is adopted, the speed limit on Woodward Road will be 25 mph between Sweetmans Lane and Lamb Lane, and 35 mph between Lamb Lane and Route 33.
A public hearing on the ordinance has been scheduled for the committee’s April 19 meeting.
The committee’s action follows the receipt of a report from CME Associates which included several recommendations aimed at dealing with motor vehicle issues that have been reported by residents to be occurring on Woodward Road.
According to the report, a traffic count revealed an average daily traffic volume between 1,800 and 2,000 vehicles. Most of the vehicles are traveling between 31 and 38 mph, according to the engineering firm’s data.
In other business at the April 5 meeting, committee members:
• Reported that Manalapan’s municipal access cable television channel, MTTN, is in need of volunteers. Teenagers and adults are welcome to volunteer;
• Announced that the Historic Commission is reaching out to residents who own artifacts from Manalapan’s past and asking them to consider donating those items for a display at Manalapan Day in June;
• Reported that registration is still being accepted for Manalapan’s summer recreation camp;
• Announced that health officials are anticipating a heavy mosquito breeding season and are asking residents to dispose of items that contain standing water and would be breeding grounds for mosquitos;
• Reported that Manalapan’s Office of Emergency Management is in need of volunteers;
• Asked residents to forward concerns regarding transportation within the community to the Transportation Committee;
• Presented a proclamation to the Manalapan High School varsity cheerleading team to recognize the squad members for winning the Spirit Brands national championship on March 11 in Wildwood. The team is coach by Lisa Rizzo-Troxell.
