George E. Magnenat

George E. Magnenat, 69, of Matawan, passed away on Monday, April 17, 2017 at home.

He was born in Red Bank, N.J., and has remained a lifelong resident of Matawan. He had a successful career as a Police Officer from 1972 to 2002 where he retired as a Captain for the Matawan Borough Police Department.

He absolutely loved his work as a police officer. One of his traits that people will remember him for was when he would portray Santa Claus during the holiday season which he did for many years for the Matawan and Aberdeen PBA or the various neighbors he visited around town. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam war where he received his honorable discharge. He was honored to be chosen as the grand Marshall in one of Matawans Veterans Day Parades.

He was very involved in his children’s lives and while they were attending school he chaperoned class trips to both Washington, D.C., and the Poconos. He was involved with the Matawan Football League and some of his hobbies included fishing, scuba diving, and traveling. George had an awesome sense of humor and was well-loved and respected by many. George’s family describes him as the pillar of strength for his family and someone you would always be able to count on. He lived for his kids and grandkids and was a true family man.

After his retirement as a police officer he used his very distinctive voice which many people knew well, to do voiceover spots on radio and TV. He is also described as a telemarketer’s worst nightmare. He was looking forward to his first grandchild’s wedding on the 28th and he will certainly be there in spirit. The stories about his life and the bonds that he has forged with family and friends will continue to live on in the hearts and minds of those who knew him.

He was predeceased by his parents, George H. Magnenat and Anne Deloskey Magnenat, and a father-in-law, Charles Centimole. He leaves behind his wife, Mary Centimole Magnenat, two sons and daughter-in-law, George C. Magnenat and his fiancé, Robin Lawson, and David and Deborah Magnenat, two daughters and sons-in-laws, Michelle Magnenat Saluka and her husband, Fred, and Danielle Magnenat Hausner and her husband, Chris, two sisters, Margaret Magnenat Ciccia, and Anne Magnenat O’Connor, seven grandchildren who were the light of his life, Alexis and her, fiancé Luis, Ethan, Dominic, and Charles Magnenat, Farrah and Freddie Saluka, and his sidekick, Christopher George Hausner, special friends, Joan and Harry Clune, Tom and Teri Futuyma, Tom McMurray, and his friend, Artie Knoeller who he is now laughing at inappropriate things with in heaven, as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

Relatives and friends are invited to gather on Saturday, April 22, 2017 from 10 to 11 a.m. at St. Clement Church, 172 Freneau Avenue, Matawan, N.J., and a funeral mass will take place at 11 a.m. The family request donations in Lieu of flowers to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund by visiting www.jdrf.org.
