HOWELL – Elementary school children in Howell will have an opportunity to test their problem solving skills at the Camp Invention summer enrichment program.
Camp Invention will take place at Howell Middle School North, Squankum-Yellowbrook Road, from Aug. 14-17, according to a press release from the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Children entering kindergarten through sixth grade may sign up for the camp.
Camp Invention will be directed by Sheila Johnson, who is a teacher at Howell Middle School South. She said this will be the fourth year Howell Middle School North has hosted Camp Invention.
“The partnership between Camp Invention and the school is very important. Camp Invention, a program of the National Inventors Hall of Fame, incorporates entrepreneurship and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education that supplements traditional school-year instruction for our students,” Johnson said.
“I want the students to be able to have fun while being creative. This camp sets a foundation for creativity, innovation and problem solving that will serve our students well,” she said.
The press release states that the camp’s curriculum is inspired by individuals who have been inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. The camp features hands-on problem solving activities, collaboration and the use of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Camp Invention will feature Duct Tape Billionaire, in which campers design duct tape products they can market and sell to mock investors; Have a Blast, in which children build high-tech Bubble Blasters and compete as a team in friendly air battles that use physics to boost their advantage; Mission Space Makers, in which teams hatch eggs, sprout living plants and grow crystal trees, all while on a mission to locate and prepare a new planet for human habitation; and Operation Keep Out, in which campers learn to reverse engineer old machines and devices and use their parts to create the ultimate Spy Gadget Alarm Box.
