SOUTH BRUNSWICK – Police are blaming distracted driving as the cause of a crash on Route 1 last week.
A 21-year-old driver was headed on Route 1 south near Deans Lane when he struck the center median during rush hour on April 19, forcing him to stay on the southbound side of the road, according to information provided by the South Brunswick Police Department.
His 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser became disabled after the crash, which occurred because the driver allegedly was distracted, according to police.
The young man was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick for treatment of a shoulder injury.
The incident was captured on a motorist’s camera who was headed in the opposite direction.
“Distracted driving is the leading cause of crashes in the state. This incident was captured on video and it highlights the dangers. If the driver had not struck the impact attenuator at the intersection, he would have crossed directly into northbound traffic. Drivers need to remember their focus needs to be on the roadway at all times,” Police Chief Raymond Hayducka said.
