South River residents again targeted by phone scammers

SOUTH RIVER – The South River Police Department (SRPD) is urging residents to be alert to phone scams demanding immediate Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) bill payments via pre-paid cards.

Over the past few weeks, there has been an uptick in the number of phone scams being reported, according to information provided by the SRPD. As per the reported incidents, residents are receiving phone calls from an individual pretending to be a PSE&G employee. The individual then requests immediate payment via a pre-paid card, specifically Green Dot Card(s) or their utility service will be shut off, according to police.

Customers are reminded to be cautious when contacted by someone threatening termination if they do not receive immediate payment via a pre-paid credit card, according to the statement. As per customer service, PSE&G will never demand immediate payment in the form of a pre-paid credit card, police said.

Any resident who receives a call from anyone representing PSE&G demanding immediate payment should not provide any personal or account information. Hang up the phone and call 1-800-436-7734.
