First place for the Coloring Contest went to Alexa Menziusa of Metuchen.

The Oratorical Contest winner was Ria Patel of Monroe.

For the 25th annual Safety Poster Contest, first place went to Angelina Tufaro and second place went to Jalissa Izarry, both of Dunellen. Angelina was also the state American Legion first place winner and Jalissa received fourth place.

“Angelina’s poster covered fire safety,” said Middlesex County American Legion Commander Gary Cooper. “All of the judges were impressed with her understanding and coverage of the topic, which was 50 percent of the judging standards. Her poster was a unanimous choice for first place in the state.”

The awards were presented by Cooper in a ceremony held at the American Legion Post 25 in Milltown on May 6.

“It is for physically and mentally challenged children up to the eighth-grade level,” he said.

Cooper said the winners at the county level receive a certificate and gift card. State winners receive $250 and a plaque for first place; second place receives $175, third place receives $115 and fourth place receives $75.

Cooper said the posters are usually returned to the children.
