SOUTH BRUNSWICK – South Brunswick police identified a person killed in a Route 1 crash on May 11 as a woman from Texas.
An investigation by officers determined that a 2016 Chrysler sedan, driven by a 37-year-old woman, also from Plano, Texas, was headed southbound on Route 1 approaching New Road in South Brunswick around 8:58 p.m., according to a statement provided by the South Brunswick Police Department.
The driver of the Chrysler reportedly attempted to make a prohibited left turn onto New Road by cutting through the divider, police said. At this time, a 2004 Mazda 6, driven by a 27-year-old male from Trenton, was traveling on Route 1 northbound in the left lane and had a green light to continue on Route 1 northbound. The Chrysler struck the Mazda nearly head on, police said.
In total, seven people were injured in the crash. A 61-year-old woman who was a rear seat passenger in the Chrysler was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick and succumbed to her injuries at 1:02 a.m., police said.
The driver and three passengers of the Chrysler along with the driver and passenger of the Mazda were also transported to Robert Wood Johnson. All were treated and released with the exception of a 66-year-old passenger who suffered a broken hip.
No charges have been filed at this time.
The Monmouth Junction Fire Department and EMS units from the Kendall Park, Monmouth Junction, North Brunswick and Plainsboro, along with paramedics from Robert Wood Johnson were at the scene.
