The incident occurred around 5:27 p.m. May 15, according to a prepared statement from the East Brunswick Police Department.

The victims advised responding patrol officers that they were contacted by an individual via Facebook who wanted to buy two pairs of sneakers from the victims, according to police. The individual advised the victims to meet him in the area of Crosspointe Drive in the Crosspointe Condominium development. Upon arrival, the victims met two individuals and let them inspect the sneakers, according to the statement.

At this time, the sneakers were allegedly taken from the victims and the suspects fled on foot through the complex, police said. While chasing the individuals, the victims were reportedly confronted by three additional individuals, two of whom allegedly pointed a black semi-automatic handgun at the victim, as well as another weapon, which was described as a black long gun, police said.

A witness informed officers that the group of males were running toward a residence in the development, which the witness recognized to be one of the suspect’s addresses, according to the statement.

The investigation by the responding patrol officers and the Investigative Division led to charges against six individuals, the oldest of whom is a South River resident and five of whom are juveniles. The adult was charged with robbery and two juveniles were also charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

The juveniles were remanded to the Middlesex County Juvenile Detention Center and the man was lodged at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in North Brunswick in lieu of a bail hearing.
