NORTH BRUNSWICK – The North Brunswick Township High School (NBTHS) STOP Student Committee has been selected for the U Got Brains Champion Schools Program.

Students Isabela Colon, Fiona Asham, Alina Akhtar and Kayla Hofacker worked with the North Brunswick Police Department (NBPD) to recognize Distracted Driving Awareness Month in April, according to a statement provided by NBTHS.

The NBPD posted an electronic billboard in front of NBTHS with the message “YOU DRIVE, YOU TEXT, YOU PAY” to inform the North Brunswick community about being attentive drivers and not be distracted by a cell phone, conversations, emails, text messages and social media.

The NBPD Traffic Safety and Patrol followed with a motor vehicle checkpoint at NBTHS where vehicles were stopped for violations, with the police officers talking to violators about safe driving. The NBPD then visited NBTHS during lunch periods to promote the banner made by the STOP Student Committee that stated “I pledge to be an Attentive Driver – JUST DRIVE”.

Through the Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey, the STOP Student Committee will receive a stipend to be used for transportation safety projects in working with the NBPD during a ceremony on May 25.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death and disability among teens in the United States. Since its inception in 2009, the U Got Brains Champion Schools Program has enabled students to address this issue with their peers, and take a positive approach to make changes in their community.
