Plumsted resident faces charges in Jackson incident

JACKSON – A 34-year-old male resident of Plumsted Township is facing a slew of charges in connection with an incident that occurred in Jackson on the evening of May 27.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred at 11:05 p.m. when, police said, the man used a machete to damage a residence and a vehicle. He left the scene of the incident prior to the arrival of officers.

Four hours later, at 3 a.m. May 28, officers located the man in front of the victim’s home. The officers attempted to conduct a motor vehicle stop of the man’s vehicle, but he left the area at a high rate of speed, according to police.

Officers pursued the vehicle until it entered the dirt road portion of Reed Road, at which time the pursuit was terminated for safety reasons, according to police.

The investigation continued and at 1:40 p.m. May 31, officers responded to a residence on Marcia Memorial Circle to investigate a report that the man they were seeking was hiding inside the home.

Police said the responding officers attempted to make contact with the man and have him exit the residence, but were unsuccessful. As the officers began to enter the home, the man was observed at a rear window.

As the officers entered the home, the man retreated to a rear room and refused to comply with the officers’ orders as they attempted to take him into custody, according to police.

Police said that following a short struggle, the man was arrested, transported to police headquarters, processed and placed in the Ocean County Jail, Toms River.

In regard to the incident on the evening of May 27, the man was charged with criminal mischief, possession of a weapon (machete), unlawful possession of a weapon (machete), eluding a law enforcement officer, harassment and stalking.

Related to the incident in the early morning hours of May 28 when officers responded to the original location to investigate a report that the man had returned to the scene, he was charged with eluding police, stalking, harassment, failure to stop at a stop sign, speeding, failure to maintain lane, disregard of a red light, reckless driving and careless driving.

In relation to his arrest on the afternoon of May 31, the man was charged with hindering apprehension.

Police said a 25-year-old woman from Jackson was in the Marcia Memorial Circle residence at the time of the man’s arrest. She was charged with obstruction and hindering apprehension for attempting to intervene with the officers during the arrest.

Detectives later located the man’s 2007 Dodge Ram truck which was involved in the May 28 vehicle pursuit hidden in the woods between North Stump Tavern and Reed roads. The vehicle was impounded and seized pending forfeiture proceedings, according to police.
