Red Bank Regional creative writing majors earn awards

Red Bank’s most creative writers have impressed both regional and national judges in this year’s writing contest.

On May 16, several Creative Writing majors at Red Bank Regional High School (RBR) learned that they have won awards for this year’s Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

Twenty-three RBR students won awards this year, including senior Kyle Ebor who won a National Silver Award. This is the second year Ebor has won the award. He  plans to attend Emerson College next year, according to the RBR press release.

The RBR students won 63 awards in all. Sixty-two of them were regional awards, and Ebor’s Silver was the lone national award, according to the release. The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards are sponsored by the nonprofit Alliance for Young Artists and Writers.

According the the release, the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards are the nation’s longest running and most prestigious recognition programs for teens in grades 7 through 12. There are 29 categories for the awards, according to the release. Those categories include poetry, photography, and sculpture.

There are other categories like editorial cartoons, and video game designs as well. According to the release, over 2,500 students from around the country received awards from more than 330,000 submissions.

Virginia McEnerney, executive director of the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers, applauded this year’s class of students, stating that the 2017 did not disappoint to hold up the high standards of the contest.

“Our wonder and amazement at the creative output of our country’s youth and dedication of our extraordinary educators never ceases,” McEnerney said. “This year is no exception.”
