ROBBINSVILLE – Steve Timko, who has commanded the governing body of New Jersey scholastic sports for 12 years, announced his retirement.
Timko will step down from his position of the executive director of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) at the end of this calendar year.
“I’ve spent 50 years working in scholastic sports, and I’ve had the opportunity to get to know so many amazing student-athletes and remarkable educators,” the 72-year-old Timko said. “I recently celebrated a birthday, I’m pleased with how my health is at this point and my passion for high school athletics is undimmed. Considering all those factors, I decided now was the appropriate time to step aside.”
Prior to being appointed executive director of the NJSIAA in 2006, Timko spent five years as an assistant director for the association.
Before joining the NJSIAA staff, Timko spent 25 years with the Hopewell Valley Regional School District, where he was director of health, physical education and athletics. He also spent three years at his alma mater, South Plainfield High School, coaching baseball, basketball and cross-country.
Timko has been inducted into the Hopewell Valley Hall of Fame, the South Plainfield Hall of Fame and the inaugural class of the New Jersey Athletic Directors Hall of Fame.
According to a press release from the association, the NJSIAA Executive Committee will appoint the next executive director based on a recommendation from a search committee. That committee will be comprised primarily of past presidents of the NJSIAA Executive Committee.
His replacement is expected to be named in September or October, according to the NJSIAA.
Key responsibilities of this position, according to the NJSIAA, include overseeing the financial affairs of the association, communicating with member schools, supervising championship tournaments and attending meetings of both the association and the National Federation of State High School Associations.
In addition, the executive director rules on interpretations of the NJSIAA constitution, bylaws and rules and regulations, all subject to endorsement from the Executive Committee.
