Allentown High School’s’ Devon Hoernlein finish at the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Meet of Champions (MOC) outdoor track and field meet was much more important to her than achieving a personal-best time.
Hoernlein fell one second short of a personal best when she was timed at 10:55.22 during the 3,200-meter run at the meet held at Northern Burlington County Regional High School in Columbus June 10. However, her time was good enough for fifth place.
“I knew going in it was going to be a fast race,” Hoernlein said moments after the race. “I’m really happy with my race today.
“I was a second off of my personal record, but I ended up placing fifth, which was one of my season goals.”
Hoernlein’s personal best is 10.54. The junior runner plans on being a nurse when she goes to college but has not decided where she will attend yet.
Carly Roche and Kassidy Mulryne also came through with sparkling days at the MOC for Allentown. Roche placed 11th in the pole vault with a mark of 10-6 and ended in 29th in the discus with a measurement of 103-2. Mulryne placed fourth in the high jump with a height of 5-6 and finished 22nd in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:05.31.
