New officer joins Freehold Borough police

FREEHOLD – A new officer has joined the ranks of the Freehold Borough Police Department. At the June 5 meeting of the Borough Council, Patrick Quirk officially became a patrolman in the borough.

Quirk was sworn in as a member of the police department by Mayor Nolan Higgins.

“When a class graduates from the police academy, they hand out awards for No. 1 in firearms, No. 1 in physical fitness, No. 1 in academics and No. 1 in the traffic safety area,” Police Chief Glenn Roberts told borough officials and members of the public.

“Officer Quirk did not win any of those awards, but the police academy also offers an award called the Outstanding Trainee Award and that encompasses all of those other awards. So to win that award you have to be No. 1 in your class and I could not be prouder to say that our very own Officer Quirk received that award,” Roberts said.

Councilwoman Sharon Shutzer said Quirk’s employment with the police department is a family commitment.

“We also need to keep in our hearts [Quirk’s] family,” Shutzer said. “His parents, his siblings [and his] spouse. We welcome all of you to Freehold Borough and we keep you in our hearts and our prayers, as we do with all of our police officers.”

In other business, council members passed a resolution authorizing an appropriation of $3,000 for the 2017 Memorial Day parade and an appropriation of $3,000 for the 2017 Spooktacular events during the Halloween season. The appropriations will cover some of the expenses of the events, according to the resolution.
