Republican candidates plan to bring change to North Brunswick

NORTH BRUNSWICK – The Republican challengers for two seats on the North Brunswick Township Council have been chosen by voters.

George Callan received 289 votes, or 47 percent, and Mayra Pais received 257 votes, or 42 percent, during the primary on June 6. Thomas Lichwa received 73 votes, or 12 percent, according to election results posted on the Middlesex County website.

Callan and Pais will face Democrat incumbents Bob Corbin and Bob Davis for two seats on the council during the general election in November.

Callan, 49, was born and raised in North Brunswick. He is a sales agent for Keller Williams West Monmouth Real Estate.

He served on the North Brunswick Board of Education from 2010-14.

He said his focus is on helping combat veterans return home, keeping budgets low and providing equal representation to residents.

Pais, 29, has lived in town for one year and is a legislative aide/attorney in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. She currently works for New Jersey’s 16th legislative district serving as liaison between constituents and state departments to solve a variety of matters.

Previously, she worked for the YWCA Legal Center representing victims of domestic violence. She also volunteered for The Pursuit of Justice, a purse auction benefiting victims of domestic violence.

If elected, Pais said she will bridge the gap between people regardless of their party affiliations, in order to accomplish what is necessary.

“I would like to thank all that engaged in their civic duty by voting in the primary, especially those that supported me. As we move forward to the November election, I plan to engage my fellow community members regardless of their party affiliations in a discussion of transparency, whether it be the budget or issues in their  backyard. I am looking forward to working with the community so that we can develop an effective plan together,” she said.

Both Republican candidates previously said they will work to bring a new perspective to the all-Democratic council.

Callan could be reached for additional comment post-primary.
