Comedian brings show to Freehold

Randi Lupo will bring her funny and insightful one-woman show, “Sometimes I’m OK,” to the Center Players Theater, 35 South St., Freehold Borough, at 8 p.m. July 7 and at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. July 8.

“Sometimes I’m OK” made its debut at the Producers Club in New York. The show is directed by Karen C. Cook.

“Sometimes I’m OK” takes a fresh, upbeat and unique look at what it took for a woman to follow her dreams and the many pitfalls lying in wait along the way that could have derailed them, according to a press release.

The Brooklyn-born Lupo, who was once married to a rock and roll roadie, sees the personal toll that real life experiences and relationships can take as gut-wrenching and revealing, but also redemptive, with laughter always the saving grace, according to the press release.

Through anecdotes and act-outs, Lupo tells about growing up in Brooklyn in a family that was a little off.

Lupo’s father subscribed to the notion that people could do anything, including cure themselves of scoliosis. Her mother was a fashion plate long before it was fashionable. She would dress Randi and her siblings in their finest clothes and send them off to school.

“There is healing in laughter,” Lupo said. “But the process begins with the courage and honesty to look deep within and confront the truth and then the ability to realize how absurd and totally comical things can really be. That’s what this show is all about – how what is so real can be so ridiculous.”

Tickets for “Sometimes I’m OK” can be purchased through www.sometimesimok.com or through the Center Players box office at 732-462-9093. Tickets are $20.
