Middlesex County officials took a swing and connected when they launched the first Middlesex County High School Golf Outing last month at he Tamarack Golf Course in East Brunswick.
According to a press release supplied by the Middlesex County Improvement Authority (MCIA), six high schools from the county competed.
The participating teams were from East Brunswick High School, Middlesex High School, North Brunswick Township High School, Saint Joseph High School of Metuchen, Sayreville War Memorial High School and South Brunswick High School.
The event, which was played May 24, featured a nine-hole challenge match along with putting and chipping contests.
Justin Yu from East Brunswick captured honors in the low gross during the nine-hole challenge. Dan O’Brien of South Brunswick placed second and Jeremy Steenvorden of East Brunswick finished third.
Jackson Schnarre of Saint Joseph won the chipping contest, where O’Brien placed second and Chris Ng of East Brunswick tended in third.
East Brunswick’s Dan Qi won the putting event, while his teammate at East Brunswick, Eegan McDermott, was the runner-up and Gaby Cano-Cortes of Middlesex finished third.
The MCIA co-sponsored the event along with the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders. The MCIA supervises all the golf courses in Middlesex County, according to the press release.
H. James Polos, executive director of the MCIA, is confident that this event will blossom in the future.
“This event will be a great new tradition to promote golf in our high schools and showcase the talent of the young golfers of our county,” Polos said. “I expect we will have a greater turnout next year as word of this successful tournament spreads.”
Freeholder Deputy Director Charles E. Tomaro, the liaison to the MCIA, stressed the importance of this event.
“The freeholder board is committed to improving our golf courses to become the best public courses in the area. This outing is a great opportunity to celebrate the athletic capability of our young golfers while showcasing how we have improved the golf experience for our players,” Tomaro said.
