A summer evening bird walk will be sponsored by the Monmouth County Audubon Society on Aug. 24 at Sandy Hook.
The walk, which will begin at 6 p.m., will involve a look and search for nesters and shorebirds. The trip will be led by members of the Monmouth County Audubon Society, who are familiar with Sandy Hook and its birds.
“The evening is a great time to explore the quieter areas of Sandy Hook,” said Linda Mack, the trip leader and past president of the Monmouth County Audubon Society. “We never know what we will discover on these summer walks – in August, the fall shorebird migration is already underway – and we may be able to sneak a peek at Piping Plovers, the endangered shorebirds that nest at Sandy Hook.”
Participants are asked to meet at 6 p.m. in parking lot “M.” That location is the northernmost parking lot on Sandy Hook (5.7 miles from the entrance gate). Follow Hartshorne Drive, the main park road, north to Atlantic Avenue, then right on Ford Road to the parking lot.
The free trip is open to both members and non-members of the Monmouth County Audubon Society. Advance registration is not required.
Participants should bring binoculars and field guides and should dress appropriately for the weather, including clothing suitable in case of rain.
This trip will involve walking in sand for approximately one-third mile each way along Fisherman’s Trail at the northern tip of Sandy Hook. The walk will take place in light rain or shine. Pets are not permitted.
