EDISON — Three new police recruits and four paid firefighters were hired as part of the township’s continuing effort to strengthen public safety in the state’s fifth largest municipality.

“Today’s new hires demonstrate my Administration’s ongoing commitment to ensuring public safety,” Mayor Thomas Lankey said. “We work diligently to find and hire the most qualified recruits for openings in our police and fire departments, and we require them to maintain a high standard of professionalism in service to our town.”

The three new patrolmen are filling vacancies caused by attrition and return the Police Department’s complement of uniformed officers to 184. The four new firefighters will increase the Fire Department’s complement to 140 paid personnel.

The new police recruits and new firefighters were sworn in on July 12.

Hired as full-time firefighters are Steven Jerome, Thomas Kenny, Christopher Taylor and Thomas Abraham, said Fire Chief Brian Latham.

Hired as new police officers are: Zachary Dlabik, a graduate of Union Catholic High School in Scotch Plains and the College of New Jersey in Ewing; Christopher Pitoscia, a graduate of St. Joseph’s High School in Metuchen and Montclair State University; and Alan M. Sciarrillo, also a graduate of St. Joseph’s High School and Centenary University in Hackettstown.

The police recruits entered John H. Stamler Police Academy in Scotch Plains for basic police training on July 14 and will continue through Dec. 14.

“It is vital to the safety of all Edison residents for our police department to maintain its current manpower levels so we can continue to provide a high degree of professional service to our community,” said Police Chief Thomas Bryan.
