The United Way of Central Jersey is urging residents to donate during the summer months.
According to a 2012 report from the Food and Research Action Center, six out of seven low-income children who eat a free or reduced school lunch during the academic year do not get a free meal during the summer.
“In the summer, thousands of families who have been relying on school lunch may find themselves short of food for the children on summer break. A hungry child is a tragedy. That’s why we all need to work together to fill the Middlesex County food bank,” Gloria Aftanski, president of the United Way of Central Jersey, said in a prepared statement.
Donations were collected during June for MCFOODS, Middlesex County Food Outreach Organization and Distribution Services.
Bahama Breeze, Banana Republic, Best Buy, DuPont, Federal Express, Jewish Renaissance Foundation, Johnson & Johnson Healthcare Systems, Lakeview School, Lyondell Basell, Middlesex County Fire Academy, Paychex, Revlon, Stern Strategy Group, Target, and the firm of Zipp,Tannenbaum & Caccavelli contributed boxes of food, while Diane Comollo, Christine DeFranco, Elizabeth Hance, Sean Healy, Jane Leal and her daughter, and Justin Smith also participated.
