SOUTH BRUNSWICK – South Brunswick police helped rescue an 18-month-old child who was locked in a hot vehicle.
Officers responded to the Nassau Square townhouse complex off of Route 27 in the Kendall Park section of South Brunswick for a child locked in a car around 11:20 a.m. July 20, according to information provided by the South Brunswick Police Department.
Officers found a distraught mother near her Honda CRV in a parking lot of the complex. The mother reportedly thought she left the vehicle running with the air conditioner on as she walked 10 feet away to her friend’s front door to drop off something, according to reports.
The mother returned minutes later and realized the vehicle was off and locked with her keys inside, police said. Her 18-month-old daughter was in a child seat in the back seat.
Sgt. Eric Buraszeski determined the child had been in the vehicle for 20 minutes and temperatures outside were exceeding 90 degrees, according to reports. He immediately broke a rear passenger’s-side window and was able to get the child out of the vehicle.
The child was transported by South Brunswick EMS to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick for an evaluation, police said.
Police are urging residents to be aware of the how quickly temperatures will climb inside their vehicles during the extreme heat of summer.
