MONROE – Steps were recently taken to improve water quality in Middlesex County.
Volunteers, and members of the Middlesex County Office of Parks and Recreation, its Conservation Corps and the Rutgers Cooperative Extension, participated in the planting of 250 flowering perennial plant species at Manalapan Lake, a shoreline restoration site in Monroe, on June 24.
These plants will control soil erosion, reduce rainwater runoff and improve habitat in the park, according to information provided by the Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Middlesex County.
Participants also learned about other restoration projects in the park, helped collect trash, cleared the angler’s access point on the shoreline and spruced up the existing rain garden, according to the statement.
This community volunteer event was part of a watershed restoration plan funded by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, and developed by project partners including Middlesex County, the Freehold Soil Conservation District, Monroe Township, Princeton Hydro and the Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Middlesex County.
