Former Major Leaguer Marksberry signs with Somerset Patriots

The Somerset Patriots have announced the signing of left-handed pitcher Matt Marksberry.

Marksberry enters his first season with the Somerset Patriots and his first in the Atlantic League.

The Cincinnati, Ohio, native was originally drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 15th round of the 2013 Major League Baseball (MLB) June Amateur Draft out of Campbell University. After being drafted by the Braves, Marksberry spent each of the first four seasons of his professional career with the franchise.

After excelling in AAA-Gwinnett in 2015, Marksberry was called up to make his Major League debut on July 31, 2015, against the Philadelphia Phillies. The left-hander made 31 appearances in his rookie season.

Marksberry made his way back to the big leagues again in 2016, appearing in four more games with Atlanta. In total, Marksberry has 35 career MLB games under his belt, striking out 23 batters in 26.2 innings.

In 2016, Marksberry split time between AA-Mississippi and AAA-Gwinnett. In 34 games between the two teams, he pitched to the tune of a 2.32 ERA, picking up 39 strikeouts in his 34 appearances that spanned 42.2 innings on the mound.

Over the course of his four-year professional career, Marksberry has appeared in 138 games, including 28 starts, winning 14 games and saving five while striking out 245 batters over 264 career innings.
