Jackson police investigate vehicle fire as arson

JACKSON – The Jackson Police Department is investigating a possible act of arson to a vehicle that was parked at a home on Metedeconk Trail, which runs between Brewers Bridge Road and Lenape Trail.

Police said that at 10:57 p.m. Aug. 6, officers responded to a residence on Metedeconk Trail to investigate a report of a motor vehicle fire.

While the officers were en route to the location, a female resident of the home reported that the fire had been extinguished.

When the officers arrived, the woman told them her husband had been driving the family’s 2006 Dodge Caravan earlier that day. She said he arrived home and parked the vehicle in the driveway at about 10:20 pm.

The woman told the officers she arrived home in another vehicle a short time after her husband and detected the odor of gasoline in the driveway.

She said that when she walked around the Caravan, she saw flames coming from the fuel door. She told the officers she ran inside the house, got a large cup of water and extinguished the fire.

Police said an investigation determined an object had been placed into the Caravan’s fuel fill pipe and that the driver’s side of the vehicle had been doused with some type of liquid.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Detective Scott Conover at 732-928-1111.
