The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) announced that Larry White will take over as its new executive director.
As executive director, White succeeds Steve Timko, who has been with the NJSIAA since 2001 and who has been its executive director since 2006. Timko announced his retirement earlier this year.
White was officially announced in his new role on Sept. 13.
White, a West Deptford resident, will formally assume his duties as director on Jan. 1, according to an NJSIAA press release. According to the release, White joined the NJSIAA in 2005, becoming its first African-American assistant director. He now is also its first African-American executive director. Also according to the release, White has overseen compliance for all eligibility and transfer rules, managed all Controversies Committee cases and supervised the officials associations during his 12 years as director.
White’s professional experience also includes serving as a vice principal in the Pine Hill School District and as a teacher in the Monroe Township School District (Gloucester County), the Woodstown-Pilesgrove School District, at St. James Regional High School (which was located in Carney’s Point) and in the West Deptford School District. White — who from 1989 to 1994 was a minor league baseball umpire — has coached baseball, basketball, golf, and boys’ and girls’ tennis, and he served as an official for high school basketball as well as for high school- and college-level baseball, according to the release.
White was nominated by a six-member search committee, which was comprised of past, present and future Executive Committee presidents. He was a unanimous selection by the search committee, and final approval of the committee’s nomination was provided Sept. 13 by the Executive Committee, according to the release.
