Woodbridge Police warn of scam

WOODBRIDGE — Police are warning residents of a phone scam after a 77-year-old Hopelawn woman was recently scammed out of more than $9,000.

The victim told police on Sept. 15 that in May she received a phone call from someone alleging to be her grandson, according to Police Capt. Roy Hoppock.

The person on the phone told the victim that her grandson was in a bad car accident in Virginia and needed her to transfer money to him.

The victim further stated she received follow up calls from someone asking for more money for lawyer fees.

On six different occasions, the victim told police, she transferred thousands of dollars through Western Union, at the request of the person calling.

The victim lost a total amount of $9,145, according to police.
