Councilman supporting Democratic slate

Typing Letter to the Editor for the Opinion page.

For over a decade, state Sen. Jennifer Beck has stood by while New Jersey’s school funding system has fallen into crisis, causing overcrowding and underfunding at Freehold Borough schools and burdening local taxpayers.

This year, when given the chance to stand up for Freehold Borough students and taxpayers, Beck once again turned her back on them. She voted no on a critical measure that allocated an additional $955,792 in funds to Freehold Borough schools which helped lower taxes and provided crucial resources for students.

If Sen. Beck had her way, Freehold Borough never would have gotten that funding.

Don’t be surprised to hear Sen. Beck taking credit for this additional state aid, even though she fought so fervently against it. But Sen. Beck can’t fool taxpayers and Freehold families deserve better than a senator who only cares about local schools when it is politically convenient.

Despite being in the General Assembly for less than two years, Assemblyman Eric Houghtaling and Assemblywoman Joann Downey have already spearheaded efforts to address New Jersey’s broken school funding system.

They battled their own party leadership to secure additional school funding and voted in favor of the $955,792 in increased aid for Freehold Borough. Now, they are running alongside Senate candidate Vin Gopal, a local small business owner who has pledged to end the damaging inaction on school funding.

On Nov. 7, it is time to send a message to Sen. Beck by voting her out of office and electing leaders who will truly stand up for Freehold Borough students.
