Matawan Regional High School’s Rachel Kenny won the Girls’ Varsity D race with a time of 19:18.

“I was definitely hoping to win,” Kenny said. “I saw that it was a competitive field, so I knew it would be a tough race. I wanted to see at the beginning how everyone else did and then ease into when I wanted to break away.”

Kenny admitted that the weather that day was a factor. Most of the day was hot and humid.

“It definitely made me think a lot about the race,” Kenny said. “It’s always a little nerve-wracking because if the race is hot, it gets tough. I tried not to be too concerned about it. I stayed in the shade. I drank a lot of water, so it didn’t really affect me too much.”
