OLD BRIDGE — Two local barbershops have partnered with the Old Bridge Public Library for the “Fade to Books” program, which promotes literacy in local barbershops.

The New Jersey State Library (NJSL) awarded a grant to the Old Bridge Library for the program.

The grant, which was established in partnership with the Long Branch Public Library and the Bridge of Books Foundation, helps redefine the role of public libraries in developing communities.

Fade to Books, which began as a pilot program at the Long Branch Public Library, recognizes the role of the barbershop as a community gathering space and the role of the barber as a mentoring figure for young men and boys.

The grant provides funds for books and bookshelves to be placed in barbershops, allowing barbers to encourage their young clients to select books to read while sitting in the waiting area or during their haircuts. Suitable new and gently used books will be provided for children up to age 12.

Anthony’s Figaro Barbershop, 163 Texas Road, and Main St. Barbershop, 2577 County Road 516, both in Old Bridge, have agreed to partner with the library in this endeavor.

Both shops have been supplied with books and are currently participating.

“This is a wonderful outreach opportunity for the Library and will assist our efforts to increase literacy among kids all year round,” Library Director Nancy Cohen said. “We are very pleased to have been selected as one of only nine libraries throughout the state to be the recipient of this valuable grant.”
