MONROE – In mid-September, Monroe welcomed two new medical transport buses to its township fleet as the result of a successful grant application with New Jersey Transit.
The pair of 2017 Ford 350 12-passenger vehicles are valued at upwards of $30,000 each and are currently on the road serving Monroe residents who need transportation to medical appointments, according to information provided by the township.
“Our Transportation Department provides our seniors and physically-challenged residents with rides to and from in-town and out-of-town medical appointments at no cost, provided they book an appointment with our staff ahead of time,” Mayor Gerald W. Tamburro said in a prepared statement. “This service takes a lot of pressure off of the individual, caregivers and family members so that these residents can concentrate on being healthy.”
Throughout the month, the medical transport buses regularly travel to Monroe, Jamesburg, Princeton, Plainsboro and Hightstown.
“These new buses are equipped with 11 ambulatory seats and one wheel-chair accessible area,” Monroe Director of Transportation Amy Rutherford said in the statement. “This enables us to service the residents who are in need of a specialty vehicle, an absolute necessity considering the portion of our riders who require these accommodations.”
