Motor vehicle stop leads to charges in 10-year-old double murder case

EAST BRUNSWICK – A motor vehicle stop for passengers not wearing seatbelts reportedly led to drug charges and then the apprehension of a murder suspect.

East Brunswick Ptl. Reginald Wright conducted a motor vehicle stop on Route 18 near Tices Lane around 8:58 a.m. Oct. 3 after observing two passengers in a white box truck allegedly not wearing seatbelts, according to information provided by the East Brunswick Police Department.

While speaking to the driver of the vehicle, a 28-year-old male from South Bound Brook, the officer allegedly detected an odor of marijuana emanating from inside the vehicle.  Subsequent investigation revealed the driver to allegedly be in possession of a quantity of marijuana under 50 grams and drug paraphernalia. He was released on his own recognizance after processing at police headquarters.

One of the passengers in the vehicle, a 32-year-old male also from South Bound Brook, was found in possession of marijuana as well. He allegedly gave the officer a false name, and was found to have an outstanding warrant out of Puerto Rico for a double homicide in 2006, according to police. He was charged with possession of marijuana under 50 grams, hindering apprehension and being a fugitive of justice.  He was lodged at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in North Brunswick.
