North Brunswick Police Department receives 40 body cameras

NORTH BRUNSWICK – Body-worn cameras are in-service and deployed in North Brunswick.

Forty cameras were purchased using a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice.

“I see the products of these systems benefiting both the public and the police. The public will receive transparency and the police will receive a recorded proof of anything they may encounter. It will help the people prove or disprove their cases, and it will help officers avoid frivolous and dishonest complaints. It provides a neutral witness to either side that may need it. I also personally believe that it will help to highlight some of the incidents that our officers deal with, either regularly or unique,” Police Captain Brian Hoiberg said.

Since the body cameras are from Watchguard Video, based in Texas, they integrate and work along with the department’s in-car or “dash-cam” camera systems, he said.

“Both systems also operate in high definition with great video and audio quality,” Hoiberg said.

The $20,000 grant covered $500 per unit, according to North Brunswick Police Lt. Michael McGinn.
