Senior programs include Civil War lesson, Halloween bash

The Middlesex County Office of Aging and Disabled Services held the event for senior citizens age 90 and over as part of its National Older Americans Month celebration.

South Brunswick resident members age 55 and older may attend the following events in October at the Senior Center, 540 Ridge Road/Route 522, in the municipal complex, Monmouth Junction section of South Brunswick:

 

  • Christine Rodriguez, outreach worker from the Puerto Rican Action Board, will accept LIHEAP/USF applications for the 2017-18 heating season from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Oct. 6. There will be a short presentation and question-and-answer session followed by an intake session. Rodriguez will have access to the state database to check current clients’ status. No appointment necessary. To register, call Marie at 732-329-4000, ext. 7676 for a list of documents needed to complete an application.
  • Ryde4Life is a membership program run by EZRide for adults ages 50 or older in partnership with transportation network companies such as Lyft and Uber. Seniors who do not drive can learn about an affordable alternative at 12:15 p.m. Oct. 12.
  • The Senior Center will present Onstage Seniors from the McCarter Theatre in Princeton for “Surprises & Aha Moments” at 12:15 p.m. on Oct. 19. The ensemble of all over-55 will perform skits and vignettes about memories and experiences. Sign up by Oct. 12.
  • Maurice Mahler will present a video and discussion on the work of the Systine Chapel at 12:30 p.m. on Oct. 20.
  • “Unsung Heroes – Women of The Civil War” will be discussed by Civil War lecturer Martin M. Mosho at 12:30 p.m. on Oct. 26. The one-hour review will focus on the heroic and remarkable accomplishments made by women, both North and South. Signup required by Oct. 23.
  • The Senior Center will host a Halloween Monster Bash on Oct. 31. Trivia starts at 10:45 a.m., followed by lunch at 11:15 a.m. The party will start at 12:15 p.m. with live music. Prizes will be awarded for the most creative costumes. Music and entertainment provided by Sound Investment Entertainment featuring the music of G. Winston Freeman. Sign up by Oct. 16.
