Tinton Falls approves referendum to improve schools

TINTON FALLS In a 909-334 vote, residents approved a $32.5 million bond referendum to fund improvements to the borough’s schools.

The borough school district is seeking to make various improvements at Mahala F. Atchison School, Swimming River School, and Tinton Falls Middle School, according to information provided by the school district.

The referendum was approved by residents on Sept. 26.

Borough residents approved the bond referendum with a 874-306 vote, while residents from the Township of Shrewsbury also voted in favor with a 35-18 vote, for a total of 909 “yes” and 324 “no,” according to the Monmouth County Clerk website.

All three of the borough schools will have improvements that include: replace classroom casework, asbestos flooring and an emergency generator; repave/reconstruct areas of pavement; rehabilitate sidewalks and curbs; new HVAC system including unit ventilators and boilers; air conditioning for the gym, cafeteria, media center and all classroom via new chiller system; new HVAC building management system, according to information provided by the school district.

The state aid essentially reduces the $32.5 million facilities bond referendum to $19.5 million over the life of the bond. This equals $151 for the average assessed home in Tinton Falls or $13 per month. For Shrewsbury residents this equals $53 for the average assessed home or $4 per month, according to information provided by the school district.

For Mahala F. Atchison School additional improvements will include: replacing classroom ceiling toilet room flooring, vinyl flooring title, two exterior sets of stairs, and mulch with rubberized play surface; removal of classroom wood wall paneling; renovate art room; new fencing around play area; new playground equipment, according to information provided by the school district.

The total cost for all of the schools improvements is $32,499,000, according to information provided by the school district.

For Swimming River School additional improvements will include: renovating four single-use toilet rooms and art room; reconfigure main office for secure entry; masonry repairs; canopy at front entrance; corridor window reglazing; new parking area at rear of site; new irrigation system for front lawn grassy area; new fencing around play area; new playground equipment; safety platform for gymnasium HVAC unit, according to information provided by the school district.

Additional improvements for Tinton Falls Middle School will include: replacing multi-purpose room flooring, science room floor title; replace locker room fixtures, finishes and equipment; replace interior classroom door, corridor lockers, and single-ply roofing; renovate two group toilet rooms and four single-use toilet rooms; rehabilitate site lighting, according to information provided by the school district.
