Hazlet school opens new technology lab

HAZLET Equipped with new laptops to Google Jam Boards, Cove Road Elementary School Principal Wayne Ramsey introduced parents and residents to the school’s latest S.T.E.A.M lab.

S.T.E.A.M is an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking, according to a prepared statement from the township school district.

On Oct. 2, the Hazlet Township Board of Education held a ribbon cutting ceremony prior to its meeting. The ceremony included tours of the four labs: Art Lab, Technology Lab, Math Lab and Science Lab, as well as the collaboration space, according to a prepared statement.

Ramsey introduced the new technology space to the parents and community while students and teachers demonstrated all of the new technology enhancements including new laptops, surface computers, SMART Boards and Google Jam Boards, according to a prepared statement.

“We are proud and thankful to have a space that allows both teachers and students to access tools and technologies that enhance learning, promote collaboration, and drive critical thinking. The S.T.E.A.M. Space will place our students at the apex of 21st century learning and innovation,” Ramsey said in a prepared statement.

These improvements, totaling almost $500,000, came as part of the referendum and the 2017-2018 approved budget. Funds were allocated to renovate and outfit this unique learning space, according to a prepared statement.

“Creating an environment like this for our students allows them to think and explore in ways we could not have even imaged just a few years ago,” said William Kolibas, president of the Board of Education, in a prepared statement. “These labs, along with the Fabrication, Art and Technology labs at Raritan High School and the science and technology labs being created at Hazlet Middle School next year, will offer the students in Hazlet opportunities they can’t get anywhere else.”

Hazlet continues to expand the technologically infused education, supporting our technology and STEAM academies, according to a prepared statement.

“With the support of the Board of Education, the Hazlet Township Public Schools intends to utilize these new labs as stepping stones in meeting the mission of our district,” Superintendent of School Bernard F. Bragen, Jr. said.
