Manalapan police investigate alleged contractor scams

MANALAPAN – Police are investigating three reported incidents of theft by deception in which Manalapan residents who are 64, 69 and 74 years old were victimized.

Police said that on Oct. 6 at 4:52 p.m., a 69-year-old resident reported entering into an agreement with a contractor to have work completed at a residence. The resident said the work was never completed and that the contractor was provided with a $2,500 deposit.

On Oct. 6 at 5:42 p.m., a 64-year-old resident reported that she had entered into an agreement with a contractor to have work completed at her home. The woman reported that the work was never completed and that she provided the contractor with a $500 deposit.

On Oct. 7 at 11:45 a.m., a 74-year-old Manalapan resident reported that she had provided a deposit of $1,100 on Sept. 7 for work at her residence. The individual to whom the money was paid had failed to do any work since the payment was made and has failed to refund the money, according to police, who said all three incidents are pending investigation.

In other incidents reported by police:

• On Oct. 7 at 4:04 p.m., employees of Verizon Wireless, Route 9, reported there was a woman in the store attempting to commit fraud. Following an investigation, a 24-year-old female resident of the Bronx, N.Y., was arrested and charged with wrongful impersonation and criminal attempt to commit theft by deception.

• On Oct. 4 at 10:06 p.m., police officers responded to the Marianne Manor residential home on Route 33 to investigate a report of a physical altercation between residents. A 59-year-old male resident of Manalapan was charged with simple assault, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon. He was placed in the Monmouth County jail, Freehold Township.

• On Oct. 3 at 1:10 p.m., loss prevention employees at Target, Route 9, reported that on Sept. 30 an employee removed various merchandise valued at $1,138 from the store without paying for the items. A 19-year-old male resident of Manalapan was placed under arrest for theft as a result of the investigation. He was processed and released.

• On Oct. 4 at 6:10 a.m., Patrolman Sean McCarthy responded to the area of Smithburg Road for a report of a motor vehicle collision. Following an investigation, a 20-year-old male resident of Freehold was charged with driving while intoxicated. He was transported to police headquarters, processed and released to a family member.

• On Oct. 3 at 10:45 p.m., Patrolman Kyle Earley conducted a motor vehicle stop on Route 522. The driver, a 24-year-old male resident of Freehold, was charged with driving while intoxicated. He was transported to police headquarters, processed and released to a family member.

• On Oct. 2 at 7:30 a.m., employees of Mr. Tire, Route 9, reported there was damage to a vending machine outside of the business. Police said that during the overnight hours, unknown individuals attempted to enter the bill deposit safe by striking it with a blunt object. No money or products were removed from the machine.

• On Oct. 3 at 8:12 p.m., a resident reported that unknown individuals removed jewelry valued at approximately $1,500 from a Sutton Drive home sometime between Sept. 26 and Sept. 30.
