SOUTH RIVER Equipped with mint green and peach yarn, the South River Public Library’s knitting/crochet group has created baby clothes for the “Knit Big for Little Lungs” campaign.

October is Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Awareness Month. RSV is a serious virus that infects the lungs and is the number one reason babies under 12 months of age are hospitalized. Many parents with babies at risk for RSV don’t know about it, according to information provided by Little Lungs.

“A premature baby is much more likely to have a respiratory issue,” Library Director Evalina Erbe said.

According to Erbe, eight members of the group began knitting the hats and blankets in late September. By Oct. 31, the group will send their items to the campaign in Princeton, where AstraZeneca will donate the items in the group’s name to babies at children’s hospitals, according to Erbe.

“We offer help with knitting and crocheting in a friendly social atmosphere. Supplies are available for beginners and for special projects such as The Coral Reef Project and Little Lungs,” she said.

“I have been looking for a charitable cause where I could contribute and expand my knowledge of my crocheting,” member Diane Skelton.

“I have been knitting for many years. Usually we make scarfs and donate them to the soup kitchen during the Christmas season. This is my first time seeing the program so I think that is great and you can make a small piece of clothing and it’s very quick,” member Jane Han said.
