Program on the Harlem Hellfighters will be held Nov. 9

The Metuchen Edison Area Branch NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) will present a program on the Harlem Hellfighters, the African American 369th Infantry Regiment of the New York Army National Guard at 7 p.m. Nov. 9 at the Stelton Community Center, 328 Plainfield Avenue, Edison.

Historian Richard Walling will speak about he Harlem Hellfighters, which was an African-American infantry unit in World War I who spent more time in combat than any other American unit. Despite their courage, sacrifice and dedication to their country, they returned home to face racism and segregation from their fellow countrymen.

One member of the unit is buried at the Hillside Cemetery in Metuchen. The event is open to the public and sponsored by the Metuchen Edison Area Branch of the NAACP. For more information call 732) 841-9023 or email info@naacpmeab.org.
