Temple B’nai Shalom in East Brunswick held its third annual “Pink” Shabbat service on Oct. 20 in recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. One in 40 Jews of Ashkenazi descent carries a BRCA (breast cancer) gene mutation, making Jewish families at 10 times greater risk than the general population. Temple B’nai Shalom Sisterhood’s Crafty Ladies group presented 50 hand-crocheted lapghans to Alecia Joy Bloom, founder/president of the The Pink and Bloom Foundation for distribution to cancer patients across New Jersey to nurture them through chemotherapy visits. The service was conducted by Rabbi Eric Eisenkramer.
