Democrat elected to replace incumbent on South River Council

SOUTH RIVER – A Democratic newcomer has replaced an incumbent on the South River Borough Council, winning just three votes more than her Republican counterpart.

Democratic candidate Sandra Adelino received 24.91 percent of the votes, with 1,398, to replace John Sapata, who received 24.85 percent of the votes, or 1,395, according to updated election results provided by Middlesex County on Nov. 15.

Sapata was the projected winner when the results were released after the Nov. 7 election.

Incumbent Republican James Gurchensky was re-elected to another three-year term with 26.01 percent of the votes, or 1,460.

Democratic candidate Ruell Brown received 24.19 percent, or 1,358 votes, in the close race.
