East Brunswick musicians reflect on hometown roots

EAST BRUNSWICK Having performed together since age 13, twins Bree and Nick Iafelice are part of an indie pop band called “Hideaway.”

“Honestly, our name came easy to us because we want our music to be a hideaway and a safe haven. We believe all music is and should be a way to express yourself comfortably,” Bree Iafelice said.

The two musicians have lived in East Brunswick their whole lives, and recently released their debut single and music video, “Nothin On Me,” on Oct. 10. Most of Hideaway’s music was written in East Brunswick, according to Bree Iafelice.

“We’ve been performing together since we were 13, so 2007. Crazy to think about, it’s been 10 years. I think our first performance was at a church fair. I remember going up there like it was yesterday. I was so nervous I was going to forget my words,” Bree Iafelice said.

Under the stage name Bree Rose, she said she is the lead singer for the band and also plays the piano, some guitar and recently started playing the drums.

“Just like any other kids, really, Nick picked up the guitar for fun and I gravitated toward piano and singing. When we were 13 he started playing guitar in a band and I would always go to their practices because I loved music. Eventually I worked up the courage to join, playing keys. It wasn’t long until I became their lead singer, and being in a band has been a huge part of our lives ever since,” Bree Iafelice said.

Nick Iafelice said that he plays the guitar and also plays the piano and tambourine.

“Yeah, we’ve been in bands together since the beginning. We always support each other, no matter where we take our musical careers. I’ve been in other bands and Bree had her solo project for a while, but our main focus now is Hideaway,” Nick Iafelice said.

Their roots started at Robert Frost Elementary School.

“I was always involved in chorus since the moment I could. I was also in band and drama club throughout elementary and middle school. We both went to Hammerskjold, about a year before it was beautifully rebuild. I was lucky enough to get the lead roll as Edwina in the play ‘Dear Edwina’ during my time there which was super cool and it really made my middle school experience great,” Bree Iafelice said.

Nick added, “I also was in band and theater throughout elementary and middle school; I played drums and trumpet. I feel like the experience really got me into playing music and soon after I picked up the guitar.”

Eric Drylewicz on bass and Mike Moraes on drums make up the rest of the band.

“My advice would be to give it your all, and most importantly continue singing and playing what you love. Always stay true to yourself and your music. The best songs flow naturally,” Bree Iafelice said.

The band’s next performance will be Dec. 5 at Paul’s Tavern on Main Street in Belmar.

“We hope for the best. We just want to change the world one song and one person at a time. Our roots are here. We want to continue doing what we love and sharing our music in hopes to impact others the way our music impacts us,” Bree Iafelice said.
