Local officials serving on new governor’s transition team

A Freehold Borough councilman and a Marlboro councilman have been named to serve on Democratic Governor-elect Phil Murphy’s transition team.

Democratic Councilman George Schnurr of Freehold Borough and Democratic Councilman Jeff Cantor of Marlboro were named to the transition team of Murphy, who emerged victorious in the Nov. 7 gubernatorial election and will take office as New Jersey’s chief executive on Jan. 16.

Schnurr and Cantor were both re-elected to their respective municipal governing body on Nov. 7.

Schnurr, who has been a member of the Borough Council in Freehold Borough since 2007, has been assigned to the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. He said he will work to advance the interests of Monmouth County residents in this area and advocate for policies and projects that will bring opportunities to every household across the region.

“It is an honor to serve as a member of Governor-elect Murphy’s transition team,” he said. “I appreciate the confidence the Murphy team has shown in me and I take on the responsibility with humility and the resolve to perform to the best of my abilities.

“I look forward to working with the co-chairs to help build an exceptional administration that serves all of the people. I am eager to work alongside men and women who have the competence, ability and character to carry out the vision of the incoming governor,” Schnurr said.

Cantor, has served on Marlboro Township Council since 2006. He has been named co-chair of the Military and Veterans Affairs transition team. He has served in the U.S. Army for more than 30 years and holds the rank of colonel.

“I am excited to be a part of this team and look forward to helping veterans in our state,” he said. “Veterans have been neglected for the past eight years. Governor-elect Murphy sees that and wants to change that trajectory to truly take care of the 435,000 veterans in our state. It is a pleasure to be on this great team and to move veterans affairs to the forefront of critical issues in our state.”
