New Jersey adoptees benefit from new law

Typing Letter to the Editor for the Opinion page.

Since the Jan. 1 enactment of the new law that removed secrecy in adoption, nearly 4,000 New Jersey adoptees have requested their original birth certificates.

Immense gratitude is due to Pam Hasagawa, the leader of NJCARE, which is the organization that spearheaded the reform, Gov. Chris Christie, state Sen. Diane Allen and state Sen. Joe Vitale, who all hammered out the legislation after a 30-year struggle.

New Jersey adoptees can now access vital family medical history, birth families may reconnect with adoptees lost to secret adoption and New Jersey adoption law finally reflects current day best practices.

The adoption reform movement has always been about health, healing and honesty and today the New Jersey adoption community truly has something to be thankful for.
