Edison accident claims the life of worker

EDISON — A 62-year-old Riverdale man, who was working as a state Department of Transportation contractor painting markings on a recently repaved section of Route 1, was fatally struck by a vehicle on Route 1 North near Forest Haven Boulevard, according to police.

The employee of Statewide Striping Corp., Parsippany, was crossing Route 1 in the designated crosswalk at 4:40 a.m. on Dec. 8 when he was fatally injured by an oncoming Suzuki SUV, said police Sgt. David Stern, the investigating officer.

The name of the victim was not released pending notification to his family, police said.

Police have not charged the SUV driver, a 52-year-old Morrisville, Pa. man, but the accident investigation is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call the Edison Police Department at 732-248-7400.

Emergency medical personnel from JFK Hospital, the New Jersey State Police, state Transportation Department personnel and the Middlesex County Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the accident scene, police said.

Traffic was temporarily shut down between Old Post Road and Forest Haven Boulevard and diverted onto Old Post Road during the investigation.
