Metuchen to host New Year’s Eve bash

METUCHEN — Almost a year ago, Mayor Peter Cammarano, in his address in the beginning of 2017, promised to celebrate New Year’s Eve 2017 in the half-acre public piazza at the intersection of Pearl Street and New Street.

Fast forward to the end of the year, a celebration will come to fruition with an outdoor party of fire dancing, fire eating, an LED light show and restaurant specials all night long.

“It’s going to be quite the event,” said Eric Berger, chairman of the Metuchen Downtown Alliance Board of Trustees.

The event will be hosted by the Metuchen Downtown Alliance (MDA) and the Borough of Metuchen. Sponsors of the event include Woodmont Properties, Metuchen Savings Bank, Nexus Parking Systems, Josell and Rosamilia families, Looney Ricks Kiss (LRK Inc.), Renaissance Properties and Whole Foods Market.

FireMagick, a professional fire dancing company based in New York, will perform in the public town plaza and a DJ from Ultimate Entertainment, a Robert Frannicola Production will be on hand to provide tunes.

Other activities include restaurant specials throughout the night, a Greenwich Mean Time (solar time at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London) countdown and ball drop in the downtown with the assistance from members of the Metuchen Fire Department, a chainsaw ice sculpture artist from Jimmy Chiappa of Jimmy’s Artistic Creations, custom vintage photo booth from Little Detour Photo Booth, custom champagne cotton candy from Asbury Park Cotton Candy Company.

“The plaza opening is the culmination of 50 years of smart planning and is a major milestone,” Berger said. “The MDA is proud to host the first event on the plaza and looks forward to the plaza drawing customers to our downtown businesses for years to come.”
