North Brunswick residents honored for impacting others

NORTH BRUNSWICK – In an annual effort to close out the year, the North Brunswick Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services and the North Brunswick Recreation Advisory Committee presented their advocate and Good Neighbor awards during the Dec. 4 council meeting.

Dr. Richard Altman has been selected for the Youth Advocate Award for 2017.

Altman moved to North Brunswick 25 years ago from New York City. He has been married to Kellie for 27 years and they have three children, Brittany, Brooke and Tatum.

He completed his undergraduate studies at Rutgers University in 1984 majoring in biology and then attended graduate school. He went on to Columbia University’s School of Dental and Oral Surgery in 1988. He completed his dental residency at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School from 1988-89. He is the sole owner of four dental practices and is currently practicing in Roselle Park. He is a member of the American Dental Association and a member of the Union County Dental Study Club, according to a proclamation read in his honor.

Altman started coaching and volunteering with the North Brunswick Travel Soccer when his youngest daughter, Tatum, started to play. He became part of the North Brunswick Girls Lacrosse Program more than 10 years ago. He spent most of his free time scheduling gym time, field space and organizing games, according to his proclamation, as well as recruiting coaches.

Akshaya Dinesh received the Young Adult Peer Advocate Award.

The senior at North Brunswick Township High School (NBTHS) has a 4.5932 GPA, achieving High Honor Roll for most of her high school career while enrolling in a multitude of honors and advanced placement courses, according to a proclamation read in her honor.

She is a member of the National Honor Society, the Technology Club, the Key Club, Model U.N. and Mathletes. She holds leadership positions in the clubs she participates in as well as many awards and recognitions for her academic achievements in history, science, math and Mathletes. She also earned the Outstanding Delegate of Saint Peter’s University Model U.N. Conference.

Akshaya is the founder and president of the Technology Club at NBTHS, based on her desire to enter the software engineering field, according to the proclamation. She earned the National Center for Women in Technology N.J. Affiliate Award and National Honorable Mention. Akshaya placed second in the statewide FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) competition in computer applications which qualified her for nationals, and she also attended the N.J. Governor’s School of Engineering and Technology summer program. She was the grand prize winner at the TechCrunch Disrupt NY Hackathon where aspiring engineers and developers gather to take part in a 24-hour hacking endurance test. She received an award and fellowship at Stanford she plus plus #Include (sic) for her work on diversity in technology.

Akshaya created and is the CEO of “Girls Make Apps,” the nonprofit group that recognizes young girls from urban and underprivileged areas in New York who are under-represented in many fields of technology and engineering.

Dana Fields also received the Young Adult Peer Advocate Award.

Dana is a senior at NBTHS with a 3.4 GPA. She has been on the Honor Roll for four years and named Student of the Month during two years.

She is a member of the National Honor Society and has been a Homeroom Representative of Student Government Organization for four years.

She currently takes a community service period to be a peer mentor in a special needs class.

She is the treasurer of the Black Cultural Alliance. She participates in the student-run step/dance team Unity that performs for Black History Month events.

She has been a member of the NBTHS Volleyball Team for four years. She was a member of the Club Volleyball Regional Team in 2015-16 and a member of the Club Volleyball National Team in 2016-17.

Dana has been part of the Alchemist Theater Company at NBTHS since 2014. She has worked as a counselor in training and a counselor at the Middlesex County College Theater Camp for the past two years.

She volunteered with a community service group called Girls To Pearls for three years. She helped with clothing and food drives, fed the homeless at a local YMCA and raised money for a family struggling to purchase gifts for the holidays.

Dana is a student at La Crème Modeling and Acting Agency since 2016 and plans to attend college in the fall where she will study television and film.

She created the SPARK Award with the help of the teachers at her school to honor her friend who passed away and her outgoing spirit, according to her proclamation.

The Good Neighbor Award was presented to Sudharani Kankanala, a longtime resident of North Brunswick.

Kankanala has been working in IT for 22 years while devoting much of her time to humanitarian causes, according to her proclamation. She has organized numerous fund aisers for the United Way and Red Cross, including blood drives and health camps.

She is involved with North Brunswick’s youth in the arts and sciences. She has served as an executive committee member of North Brunswick Boy Scouts Troop 18 for more than four years, assisting the troop in the planning of outdoor activities and raising funds to purchase the gear needed for camping.

She has been a member of the Executive Committee of the North Brunswick Township Science Symposium and works closely as a volunteer coordinator leading the fundraising efforts.

She also assists senior citizens of North Brunswick with snow removal, and organizes the clothing drive and the food drive for the North Brunswick Food Bank. She has served as a member of the Rotary Club of North Brunswick, South Brunswick and Plainsboro. She is the current president of the Rotary Club and supports many local and diverse projects such as assisting fire victims in Hidden Lake Apartment complex.

As an Executive Committee member of NBT India Day, she encourages arts and culture among the young, involves them in leadership training, event management and conducts India Independence Day and the India Republic Day, according to her proclamation.
